CAROLINE AMSTUTZ

Research Lead, Matter Design

Caroline Amstutz (they/them) is a multidisciplinary designer and recent Seattle transplant.  They received a Master of Architecture from MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning in 2024, following a B.S. in Architecture and concentration Fine Arts from Washington University in St Louis in 2019. During their time at MIT, Caroline focused their studies on fabrication, craftsmanship, and explorations of traditional ecological, material, and architectural knowledge.

Caroline is passionate about careful craft and hands on experience. In 2021, Caroline was a design-build resident for MOA's (Mobile Office Architects) Small Project Studio on Guemes Island, WA, where they got a first taste of the Pacific Northwest (and knew they would be back!)

Currently, Caroline leads research at Matter Design, collaborating with industry partners to speculate:  how can architects leverage embodied intelligence to design for radical longevity?
