Try: An array of artisanal foods at ‘Gobble Up’
Each holiday season the organizers behind Seattle’s Urban Craft Uprising take over Magnuson Park Hangar for a weekend of crafty holiday shopping. The massive holiday market features an incredible array of handmade goods for the whole family. If edible gifts are more to your liking, then Gobble Up, a market organized by the same group, may be just the ticket. This rendition of their maker's market offers gifts to suit all types of taste buds. The event, which is free to the public, features hundreds of local craft-food creators slinging local fare ranging from artisan sauces and chutneys to vegan baked goods and CBD chocolates. The show also features a variety of kitchenware and a solid showing of food trucks too. Gobble Up will take place on November 20 at Magnuson Park and tickets are available here.
Watch: Beans, a coming-of-age film at SiFF
Beans, the new film from Mohawk filmmaker Tracy Deer, depicts the coming-of-age story of a 12-year-old girl during the Oka Crisis. Drawing upon her roots in documentary film and her experience growing up in the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, Deer delivers a timely and authentic film. Critic Laura Good points out that “although Beans is a period film, it serves as an apt reminder of the oppression and injustice that Indigenous communities are still facing today, and the long road to reparations. It’s also a powerful testament to the strength and power that comes with claiming your voice.” The film is now playing virtually at SiFF and tickets are available here.
Listen: New material from Dave Sedaris
The author famous for his self-deprecating autobiographical essays is once again gracing a Seattle stage at Broadway Performance Hall for a weeklong set of new material. Come listen to Sedaris fine-tune excerpts from the manuscript of his upcoming book “Happy-Go-Lucky.” The chosen venue of BPH, which has less than 300 seats, will provide attendees with an up-close-and-personal experience of the internationally acclaimed author and humorist. In addition to listening to “workshop” readings from the author’s forthcoming book, audience members will also have the opportunity to pose questions directly to Sedaris in a live Q&A. Performances will take place between from January 5-11, and tickets are available here.
